Finding the right role for your career goals and values can be a daunting task. It is of the greatest importance that you make the right choice. To make sure you are pursuing an active job search, here are 3 tips to consider:

1. Networking

There is no real substitute for getting out and meeting people. Try this: force yourself to make a list of 200 people that you know. Once you have made the list, prioritise the top 10-20 who are most useful to your search. Go and see these people - ask for advice only (never for a job) - leave a good impression and at the end just ask if there are 1 or 2 people it might be useful for you to connect with. Critical step: if they say "I'll introduce you to....", you MUST step in and say "Let me do that, give the the contact details now or I will follow up and get the details from you." You must not leave your contact with any action items at all, this is critical - everyone is busy, with the best intentions 

2. Create a high impact half page profile

Recognise that while CV's are necessary, even the best most concise are fundamentally boring. Have a go at this alternative 1/2 page profile to distribute and promote yourself. You are allowed just a 1/2 page. Start with a heading that sums up your identity in the role you want. Have a go at completing the sentence "I am................................" to generate this. Then allow yourself two paragraphs that describe the benefits of you, this is also the basis for a 90 second spoken summary of what you are about. After the two paragraphs list 3-5 bullet point achievements. Summarise in each bullet the situation, your action and the result (S.A.R.). If the result can be expressed as $, %, numbers, even better. Use action words at the start of each bullet point, e.g. Led, created, implemented, drove, transformed, etc.

3. Prepare a TWO page resume

I'll say that again a TWO page resume. The second critical tip: NEVER put your photo on a resume. It doesn't matter who wants it - DON'T, EVER. People will naturally judge you on your photo and that judgement will almost always be negative. Start your resume with the high impact half page profile.
